What is Esk Valley News?
Community magazine for the Esk Valley and Whitby, North Yorkshire
Esk Valley News is a community magazine, published monthly, with articles about local people, projects and activities, events, history, gardening, nature, farming, workshops, arts and crafts, music and culture.
The magazine is designed to give a voice to members of the community - to share their stories and connect with others. Nicola and Pascal produce and edit the magazine from their home in Glaisdale.
Esk Valley News was set up as a project for local people and lovers of the Moors to write about items of interest in the area, to share views, report on community events and publicise fundraising and other initiatives – to help connect the community and support local businesses. Contributions and production are organised by Basement Press and the magazine is printed with the help of adults with special needs (members of the Camphill Community) at Camphill Press, Botton Village in the North York Moors National Park.
Although set up as a publication for the community, the magazine is also popular with visitors to the area who enjoy the in-depth stories and insights into daily life in this rural area.
The magazine is distributed at shops and cafes in villages in and around the Esk Valley, at the National Park Centre in Danby and The Dispensary and Whitby Bookshop in Whitby. It is also sent to a growing number of postal subscribers and is available as a digital file received by email. See our Store for information about buying the magazine.
The Esk Valley News website offers free advertising for local fundraising events, an opportunity to publish extra material (photos, movie clips, etc) and a library of archive material. Readers can comment and share items of interest on the Esk Valley News Facebook page
www.facebook.com/eskvalleynews, and the Twitter feed @EskValleyNews keeps the wider community informed of news and events in the area.
Birth of a Magazine
Esk Valley News began life in September 2004. The founder, Ann Bowes, took the brave decision to introduce a magazine to the Esk Valley area to cover subjects of interest for people living in the valley. Success followed and after nearly six years, with a circulation of 200 copies/month, she decided to retire from the magazine and focus on her publishing company (Fryup Press). This is when she handed over the reins to us – Nicola and Pascal of Basement Press (more about us here). Our first issue was No. 69, published in April 2010. Since then, circulation figures have risen, we've given the magazine a new look and broadened the distribution area and focus a little.
