About the Area

Esk Valley News is produced in the Esk Valley, near Whitby, in the North York Moors National Park. This is an area of hidden valleys, heather moorland, ancient woodland and a stunning heritage coastline. Dig into the layers of history and you will discover fascinating stories bringing to life the landscape, buildings and relics of the past.

Heritage Coast

The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast is 36 miles long and stretches from Saltburn down to Scalby Ness near Scarborough. It encompasses some of the UK’s most rugged and charming countryside, from tiny fishing villages clinging to rocky cliffs to glorious stretches of white sand and family-friendly seaside resorts.

Forests and Woods

The North York Moors National Park has an abundance of forest and woodland, with ancient trees and diverse flora and fauna. Dalby, Langdale 
and Cropton Forests are part of what is sometimes known as the North Riding Forest Park, the country’s largest upland heath forest.

The Esk Valley

The River Esk, in the northern part of the North York Moors National Park, runs through some of the most spectacular landscape in the UK. Rising on Westerdale Moor, the river flows through the valley of Eskdale (the 'Esk Valley') to Whitby, a course of around 28 miles.
