We hope these new arrangements will help Esk Valley News live on in the community.
We’ll be in touch with subscribers and advertisers to discuss the changes when we’ve worked out how much the Quarterly cover price needs to be to cover costs.

SPECIAL FOCUS: JULY 2022

The first Quarterly in July will focus on Climate of the Moors and Sea. We’d love to receive your stories and articles about climate / weather around this area, past, present and future; green initiatives; wildlife and the environment; farming, people, local history, etc. We hope you will share poems, short stories, artwork and photographs – they don’t all have to be about climate either!
If you have an idea for a future ‘Focus’ for the Quarterly, please email: valleynews@basementpress.com We’d love to hear from you.

WHY IS ESK VALLEY NEWS CHANGING?
When we began publishing Valley News in April 2010 we never imagined it would carry on for another twelve years – and we still want it to carry on if we possibly can! We love publishing local stories and helping the community share information, and we’re grateful to you all for your support and encouragement.
The monthly Esk Valley News magazine is well supported we feel the time has come to make changes:
Social media is brilliant for spreading news rapidly through the community but it does make this particular role of the printed monthly Esk Valley News magazine less prominent. We are conscious of the cost and paper wastage of unsold copies and the increased costs in time and fuel – and pollution – from widening our distribution.
The cost of paper is also rising. Our wonderful printer – Alan at Jetprint, Whitby – is now forced to raise printing prices, which means a price rise for the magazine to cover our costs. We haven’t increased the price for twelve years, so this is a possibility, but we feel a bigger change is necessary.
Last summer we experimented with a special full-colour 128-page bound edition (‘All About Trees’) over two months instead of our usual 48-page monthly magazine. The ‘Tree book’ sold out, and its longer shop shelf-life meant more exposure for our advertisers. Feedback from readers was very good: ‘... a great read and full of interest’, ‘... looks beautiful’, ‘...a publication to keep on the bookshelf’. And distribution costs were halved.
The experiment has led us to the following plan for the future:
From July 2022 onwards we will replace the monthly magazine with a larger quarterly publication modelled on the full-colour special published last summer.
