What is Esk Valley News?

Community magazine for the Esk Valley, North York Moors and Whitby

Picture
Esk Valley News is a community magazine, published monthly, or occasionally bi-monthly for special editions. It is printed locally and distributed in village shops and cafes, and via postal subscriptions. Digital copies are distributed by email. The articles cover a wide range of topics connected with the Esk Valley, Whitby and the wider area of the North York Moors National Park.
Contributions come from members of the community and anyone who has an interest in the area, its natural resources, people and industries, history and activities. The editors are always pleased to receive contributions for publication.
The magazine is edited and produced in Glaisdale by partners Nicola Chalton and Pascal Thivillon, who also run a small publishing business (Basement Press).

Social Enterprise
Esk Valley News was set up as a service for residents and local businesses of the Esk Valley and Whitby. Its reach has now spread to much of the North York Moors National Park and surrounding towns, including Guisborough and Loftus.
Each month, the editors (Nicola Chalton and Pascal Thivillon) collect articles from contributors. They edit, design and shape the magazine, and arrange printing and distribution via shops, cafes and subscribers.
For many years, printing was carried out with the help of adults with special needs at Camphill Press, Botton Village. Currently the magazine is printed by Jetprint in Whitby.

Distribution
The magazine is sold in shops and cafes around the Esk Valley, moors and coastal area, at the National Park Centre in Danby and at The Future Health store and Whitby Bookshop in Whitby. Printed copies are posted to subscribers and digital copies sent by email to online subscribers. See Store for information about buying the magazine.

Online Resources
The Esk Valley News website offers free advertising for local fundraising events, additional published material and a growing library of archived issues. Readers may comment and share items of interest on the Esk Valley News Facebook page. The Esk Valley News Twitter feed keeps the wider community informed of news and local events.

Birth of a Magazine
Esk Valley News
began life in September 2004, founded by Ann Bowes. She decided to introduce a magazine to the Esk Valley area that would cover subjects of interest for people living in the valley. Success followed and after six years, with a circulation of 200 copies/month, she retired from the magazine to focus on her publishing company, handing the reins over to us – Nicola and Pascal of Basement Press. Our first issue was No. 69, published in April 2010. Since then, circulation figures have risen, we've given the magazine a new look and broadened the coverage and distribution area. We were delighted to reach the 200th issue milestone with the March edition in 2021.
