What is Esk Valley News?
Community magazine for the Esk Valley, North York Moors and Whitby
Esk Valley News is a community magazine, published monthly. It includes articles on local people, places, projects and businesses; activities and events; local history, folklore and traditions; gardening, farming and nature; short stories, poetry, art and photography; notices and information.
The magazine provides an opportunity for people to publish and share stories and information through the traditional medium of a printed magazine and online. We are always pleased to receive contributions for publication.
The magazine is produced at our home in Glaisdale, where we run a small publishing business (Basement Press) producing magazines and local books.
Esk Valley News was created for residents and local businesses of the Esk Valley and Whitby, and the surrounding moors, dales and coastal area of the North York Moors National Park. It is also popular with visitors to the area and those living further afield who have connections to this part of North Yorkshire.
As a family team (Nicola Chalton and Pascal Thivillon) we work as joint editors and publishers. Each month we collect articles, edit, design and create new content, and arrange printing and distribution to shops, cafes and subscribers.
For many years, the printing was carried out with the help of adults with special needs at Camphill Press, Botton Village. Currently the magazine is printed by Jetprint in Whitby.
The magazine is sold in shops and cafes around the Esk Valley, moors and coastal area, at the National Park Centre in Danby and at The Dispensary and Whitby Bookshop in Whitby. We post and deliver printed copies to subscribers and send digital copies by email to our online subscribers. See our Store for information about buying the magazine.
The Esk Valley News website offers free advertising for local fundraising events, further published material (photos, movie clips, etc) and a library of archived issues. Readers can comment and share items of interest on the Esk Valley News Facebook page. The Esk Valley News Twitter feed keeps the wider community informed of news and local events.
Birth of a Magazine
Esk Valley News began life in September 2004, founded by Ann Bowes. She took the brave decision to introduce a magazine to the Esk Valley area to cover subjects of interest for people living in the valley. Success followed and after six years, with a circulation of 200 copies/month, she retired from the magazine to focus on her publishing company, handing the reins over to us – Nicola and Pascal of Basement Press. Our first issue was No. 69, published in April 2010. Since then, circulation figures have risen, we've given the magazine a new look and broadened the distribution area. We are delighted to have reached the 200th issue milestone with our March edition in 2021.
